LAND+OBJECT Launches Navajo and Mongolian Fashion Collection

Artisans collaborate to create sustainable knitwear

SANTA FE, New Mexico October 19, 2022 — Native American fashion brand LAND+OBJECT is launching a cold-weather accessories collection made in collaboration between Navajo and Mongolian artisans. LAND+OBJECT founder, Sheyenne Sky, is a 26-year-old Navajo fashion designer. While living in Mongolia as a child, Sky noticed many similarities between her Navajo heritage and Mongolian culture. Notably, both cultures are internationally known for high-end textiles.

After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology and Harvard, Sky launched LAND+OBJECT because she believes indigenous wisdom could transform the fashion industry. Indigenous wisdom is the ecological knowledge acquired by indigenous people over thousands of years through direct contact with the environment.

Long before sustainability became a buzzword, indigenous people listened to the natural world to find ways to live in balance with the environment. Sky’s first collection was created in collaboration with Erdenet Cashmere, a women-led textile mill in Northern Mongolia. Mongolia is a country known for its luxury cashmere. The lesser-known camel and yak herding traditions are equally perfected practices rooted in environmentally friendly lifestyles.

Everything from herder relations, to yarn development, and knitting is done in Mongolia. This ensures that indigenous wisdom is honored when transforming raw wool (a natural resource) into a finished knitwear product. This process also supports the growth of the larger Mongolian textile economy. Sky believes embracing indigenous wisdom will unlock the true potential of the sustainability movement within fashion.

“Autumn has hit Alaska and the looming winter is upping the chill factor, so I’ve been wearing my LAND+OBJECT socks nonstop. They feel cozy, luxurious to the touch, and the way they cradle the foot brings a nurturing feeling — I  have even slept in them! I appreciate that they are Indigenous-designed and geared towards sustainability.”

Maka Monture (Lingít Artist and L+O Customer)

LAND+OBJECT’s knitwear collection features camel wool socks in calf and knee-high lengths in three natural colors: sand, clay, and mud. Camel wool is softer than traditional wool, insulative, moisture-wicking, odor-blocking, and durable– a favorite amongst campers and hikers.

Also new this season is a sublimely soft Yak wool beanie that is warmer than wool and more breathable than cashmere. This collection is priced between $50-100 and launches on October 25th, with presales now open at www.landobject.com.
