ABOUT
LAND+OBJECT is a sustainable design company based in Santa Fe, NM on Tewa lands. We tell stories of tradition using modern artisanal techniques. The empowerment of indigenous creatives around the world is the driving force behind our practice.
Founder, Sheyenne Sky, is a Diné (Navajo) entrepreneur specializing in luxury goods and fine art. Originally from Gallup, New Mexico, she has had the privilege of living on foreign lands for most of her life. She developed many cherished relationships in countries like Indonesia, Zambia, Colombia, and Mongolia. While it was hard to move so frequently as a child, traveling nurtured high ethical standards and a sense of global citizenship and responsibility -- all very important in running a multi-national sustainable fashion business.
Sheyenne Sky hopes to inspire positive change by promoting the Diné life-way values of peace, balance, harmony, and beauty. She is creating a global network of indigenous-owned businesses implementing land-based sustainability approaches. LAND+OBJECT is her platform to celebrate cross-cultural similarities and share unique stories to foster a global network focused on the success of Indigenous arts.
MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER
I lived in Mongolia off and on for a total of five years from 2010 to 2020. While living in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar as a high school student, I first started to develop the concept of a global identity. I recognized many cultural similarities as well as systemic issues that my Diné community back home shared with the Mongolian people.
I started this business as a final project in a financial modeling class at Harvard in 2020. Affordability, sustainability, ethical sourcing and manufacturing were central to the development of my idea from the beginning. The following year was spent nurturing the concept of what would eventually become LAND+OBJECT.
Through thousands of years of refinement, indigenous nomads around the world have listened to the flow of the natural world around them to find unique ways to live in balance. Nomadic herder lifestyles in particular are not only “zero waste” but also a form of stewardship that serves the Earth.
Diné spiritual beliefs teach that a balanced life is one that includes raising livestock, spinning natural fibers, and creating natural fiber arts. Spider Woman, a Diné deity, taught our people how to process the wool of Churro sheep. The hot weather of our ancestral homelands allowed for delicate fibers which we then hand-spun into yarn and wove into exquisite textiles.
LAND+OBJECT was born out of a desire for a more holistic approach to fashion that honors traditional wisdom. As a Diné woman, I relied on Spider Woman’s teachings as a starting point. What developed was an all-female team of creatives dedicated to the success of Indigenous manufacturing through sustainable design.
I am excited to share the journey ahead as we boldly shape a more positive future for indigenous communities around the world.
Ahéhee,
Sheyenne Sky
